Albert Nikiforovich Tavkhelidze is a prominent
theoretician working in particle and high-energy physics. An apprentice
and collaborator of N.N. Bogolyubov, he is world-famous for works on
quantum field theory and particle physics. In collaboration with
N.N. Bogolyubov and B.V. Struminsky he introduced new quantum number -
"color" of quarks which helped to solve the
difficulties of quark model of hadrons. SU(3) gauge symmetry related
to this quantum number is the basis for quantum chromodynamics - standard theory
of strong interactions. In collaboration with
V.A. Matveev and R.M. Muradyan he has discovered general behavior of
elastic cross sections in scattering of hadrons at large
transfer momenta. Recently
there has been an outburst of interest to this result related to
AdS/CFT correspondance.
A.N. Tavkhelidze is founder and first director of the Institute for
Nuclear Research RAS.
