Institute for Nuclear Research RAS (INR RAS) is large scientific center where world-class research is conducted in the fields of particle physics, physics of atomic nuclei, cosmic ray physics and neutrino astrophysics. The head of the Institute is academician-secretary of Physical science department Victor Anatolievich Matveev. Institute carries world-famous experimental projects: Moscow meson factory, "Troitsk-nu-mass" experiment, Baksan neutrino observatory Lake Baikal neutrino telescope. Staff of INR RAS includes 5 academicians and 4 corresponding members of RAS. Educational center of INR RAS consists of Graduate program, Chair of fundamental interactions and cosmology of MIPT and new Chair of particle physics and cosmology of Physics department of MSU.

The founders of the Theoretical department of INR RAS belong to the scientific schools of academicians N.N. Bogolyubov and M.A. Markov. During existence of of the Theoretical department a unique scientific school has been created by academicians V.A. Rubakov, V.A. Matveev, A.N. Tavkhelidze, corresponding members of RAS V.A. Kuzmin and I.I. Tkachev. Department performs research in high energy physics, cosmic ray physics and astrophysics. Staff members develop nonperturbative methods for description of particle collisions, investigate processes beyond the Standard model of particle physics, describe theoretically early Universe, study deep interconnections between particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Department is heavily involved in collabotations with scientific centers in Europe, USA and Japan. Approximately half of staff members of Theoretical department is yonger than 40.
